Analysis of Dr No scene

m- The background of the scene is the beach which normally is a connotation of peace, quiet and serenity going along with the singing it creates a sereal atmosphere, where nothing is to be expected. The actress is wearing a bikini confirming mulvey's theory as she is attracting the male gaze (provokative clothing). The knife by her side takes away the 'sexyness' of the scene with dangerous and violent connotations.

i- The main values and ideologies of the extract are to do mainly with the mix between the connotations of the bikini and the connotations of the knife. The main ideas follow the pattern of, women can be sexy and in control at the same time, still remaining authoratitive in their own way.

g- The genre of the film is the same as the genre for all of the james bond films as they want to keep the same theme going throughout their films as they have a big fan base. The genre is action mixed in with spy thriller with james bond holding the key to both types of genres.

r- At the start of the scene, the woman is left as a passive female with her not being able to do anything as she walks out of the water attracting the male gaze (literally from james bond) however that suddenly changes as we see a knife by her side which connotes violence and danger which proves that women have more than one role in the films. Even the male in the scene is acting as a passive person as he doesn't know what to do with her coming out of the water and is soon on the back foot as the woman reaches for her knife and draws it out.

a- The audience members for this particular scene would be males of a middle age as they would like to see the woman walking out of the water as she is wearing provokative clothing and is attracting the male gaze. This can be proved as this scene was voted the sexiest scene by channel 4.

i- As with the rest of the movies the storyline is done by ian fleming while the director and the producer of the film are Terence young and Harry saltzman with the institution being metro goldwyn mayer (mgm).

n- The narrative of this particular scene is that the actress (ursula andress) is playing the bond girl and she walks out of the water with a knife and with goggles on and is singing as she comes out of the water, meanwhile james bond is standing in the shadows of the trees watching and starts singing with her aswell and she draws her knife out connoting the violence making the male passive (sort of like a role reversal).

Main scenes being looked at

This scene is from the 1962 James bond film Dr No starring Sean connery and Ursula Andress. The reason that i am looking at this scene is because it is one of the main focussed on scenes because of nature of the scene. This scene was one of the most iconic scenes because of the nature of the scene at the time.

Trailer analysis (migrain)

Text- Casino Royale trailer

M- colour of the picture is black and white to possibly connote the historical aspects of James bond, the planes and money showing the higher end of the social status, violence shown in the fighting scenes in toilets, all aspects of the trailer are aimed at people of higher status because of the settings and the cars (all mise en scene).

I- metro goldwyn mayer (mgm for short) and Columbia

G- The genre of the film is mostly based on the action genre as most of the scenes include fight scenes or scenes of violence however historically, James bond films also include a bit of comic relief in them and this is another movie that follows that pattern.

R- Men are represented in masculine ways with scenes of violence.

Daniel Craig emerges out of the water taking away some of his masculinity and attracting a female gaze.

Women are represented in a way that they are confirming mulvey's theory of being objectified with bikinis, no trousers and low cut dresses.

All characters in the film are being represented from a high social class with the cars, houses, and poker games that are being played.

A- For a James Bond film there is no primary and secondary audience because historically, James Bond films always attract a wider audience of all social classes.

I- Main ideologies include, money is everything (cases of money at the start), women are shown as equal to men in some aspects with the authoratitive and powerful clothing and actions taken by the females in the movie. Eva Green being a spy shows the equality between men and women.

N- The narrative is a linear narrative because it flows through one way without any flashbacks during the linear narrative and it doesn't follow Todorov's theory as it keeps being disrupted all the way through and it is all violence and spying.

Issues, debates and theorists included

Given the title of my independent study, it's not that hard to guess which theorists i am going to include. Laura mulvey is the main theorist as i am foccusing more on women and how they are being represented in Bond movies. However, with this study including the representations of women theorists like Propp and Levi strauss will be focussed on aswell.

With the parts about the representations of women in James Bond films, Propp will be a key theorist to look at because of his theory, which is all about good vs evil and from his theory i can determine whether the 'Bondgirls' are being represented as good characters who run around with the spy or whether they are being represented as evil in which case they would be fighting against the spy and having more power in the film. Included in this section of the study would be Levi strauss as his theory is all about binary oppositions which would tie in very well with my focus on representations of women.

Looking good at this stage, just getting into the flow of things should turn out well research is getting there, keep ya posted.

Plans for the summer

As the summer holidays are fast approaching, i have decided that i will continue the research that i have started especially since we have to hand in and present what we have managed to do over the holidays (cheers Mr Bush).

So far i have not managed to complete that mush however at the moment i am just concentrating on retrieving all of the background information that i need to carry on with the independent study. Even though Casino Royale is my main focus point for the study i am also going to continue researching on other texts related to give me a better understanding of my chosen text.

By the end of the holidays i should have done quite a bit of research that will no doubt set me of in the right direction and the presentation after the holidays should be a good one with my research. Keep ya posted
